Church of St. Francis of Assissi - Křižovnické Square, Old Town
Křižovnické Square, Old Town
Church of St. Francis of Assissi with the Monastery of the Knights of the Cross with a Red Star encloses the Square of the Knights of the Cross. Early Baroque church with a monumental brick dome was built in 1679-89 by Italian builder D. Canevalli based on a plan by J. B. Mathey on the foundations of an older church of the Holy Spirit. The main axe of the church is unusually situated in north-south direction (i.e. perpendicular to the usual direction of churches). This is because the Knights of the Cross wanted their church to face the square. The sculptural decorations were done by M. V. Jäckel and O. F. Quitainer among others. Precious interior decorations include a fresco by V. V. Reiner and a painting by J. K. Liška at the main altar. There are underground rooms with a chapel beneath the church.
