At the French Crown

Karlova Street 4/188, Old Town

Late Renaissance house built around 1600 from a Gothic building, adapted in mid-19th century. In 1607-12 the German astronomer J. Kepler used to live there and finished his masterpiece Astronomia Nova there; there is a tower in the courtyard where he allegedly had his observatory. Kepler’s stay is commemorated by the memorial plague on the façade and his bust in the carriage-way of the house. Another memorial plague is dedicated to another famous inhabitant of the house, actor R. Deyl Sr.
