St. Francis Xavier

Francisco de Yasu y Xavier was born to a Spanish noble family in 1506. He was one of the first Jesuits. In the year of 1541, Francis left as a missionary for India, where he was shocked by the Portuguese colonization politics; after his unsuccessful attempt to ease the cruel treatment of the natives, he started his mission and baptized many people. Then he gospeled on Ceylon and the Moluccas. In the year of 1549, he went to Japan to spread the gospel and even tried to get to China, which was closed to foreigners. He died on the Island of Sancian near Canton in 1552. His letters provide a lot of information. He is a patron of the Jesuits, missionaries and sailors. His attributes are a Blackman, Hindu, cross, lily and torches. He was canonized in 1622.
