Saint Sebastian

This Roman martyr from the second half of the 3rd century was born in Milan and, according to legend, was an officer of the Emperor Diocletian’s bodyguard, a cruel persecutor of Christians. When he converted to Christianity and refused to foreswear his faith, he was tied to a tree and shot with arrows. A woman found him still alive and treated his wounds and healed him. Sebastian then again went before the emperor to rebuke him for his cruelty, whereupon the emperor had him beaten to death and thrown down a privy. Saint Sebastian is revered as the patron saint of soldiers, archers, war invalids, athletes, ironmongers, potters, tanners, tin founders, gardeners and well diggers. He comes to the aid of ill animals and people. He is always depicted tied to a tree and pierced with arrows.
