Republic Square

The open space on the eastern side of the Old Town; the name reminds of the establishment of the independent Czechoslovak state in 1918. Originally, the walls and trenches of the Old Town fortification run through here, in the place of today’s Municipal House stood the Royal Court, which had been the residence of Czech kings for one whole century since 1383. Throughout the centuries, the square had undergone many architectural changes and today, only the Gothic Powder Tower still reminds of the past glory of the place. At present time, the square is mainly a traffic crossroad: eight roads lead into it, a tram line passes through it and there is also a station of the underground line B.
