Malé Square

The name Malé Square (Small Square) differentiates this area from the neighbouring large Old Town Square. Houses which line the square, usually have Romanesque foundations and the square still has a triangular layout since those times – the road from the Old Town market branched here into roads leading to the main Vltava River crossings and to Vyšehrad. In the Middle Ages, French merchants used to stay here by the St. Linhart church, and they also had their burial grounds there. The place became famous for pharmacies, which were located almost in every other house during those times. The current name of the square has been used roughly since the middle of the 19th century.
